Where Are the Worst Neighborhoods in Memphis to Live?

 

Memphis made TIME’s The World’s Greatest Places of 2021 list last summer. It landed next to a lot of other great cities like Cannes, France, Osaka, Japan, and Sydney, Australia.

But unfortunately, Memphis also landed on another list last year. It earned the top spot on a list of the most dangerous places to live in the U.S. There are more than 300 homicides that take place in the city each year.

You shouldn’t let this stop you from moving to Memphis. But you should be aware of the worst neighborhoods in Memphis prior to putting down any roots in the city.

The answer to the question, “Is Memphis safe to live in?”, will be “yes” unless you end up in one of the most dangerous places to live in Memphis. Check out some of these neighborhoods below and do your best to stay away from them.

Shelby Forest-Frayser

If you take a look at almost any of the lists of the worst neighborhoods in Memphis that are out there, you’ll find that Shelby Forest-Frayser will land at the top of most of them. And it’s not hard to see why.

Although this neighborhood is situated right near both the Mississippi River and Meeman-Shelby Forest State Park, the crime in this part of town is dangerously high. In fact, some reports have suggested that about 1 out of every 12 people will be the victim of some kind of crime in this neighborhood.

It doesn’t seem like it’s going to get safer anytime soon, either. With a population of right around 35,000 and an average income under $25,000, it seems like Shelby Forest-Frayser is going to continue to land at the top of lists of the worst neighborhoods in Memphis.

Parkway Village-Oakhaven

The homes found in Parkway Village-Oakhaven sit right near three major highways. As a result, they’re not worth as much as they would be worth if they were situated in better locations.

This has resulted in a lot of people who are living at or below the poverty line moving to this part of Memphis. It has also led to a spike in crime in the Parkway Village-Oakhaven area.

When you’re trying to decide where to live in Memphis, this neighborhood shouldn’t land anywhere on your list. You should also look into possibly selling your house for cash and moving to a different part of Memphis if you already live here.

Berclair-Highland Heights

Compared to some of the other neighborhoods that are on this list, Berclair-Highland Heights isn’t really that bad. Many people in and around Memphis will tell you that Berclair-Highland Heights is actually an up-and-coming neighborhood that has the potential to be a great place to live.

But at the moment, the crime rate in this part of town is still relatively high compared to the crime rates in many other parts of Memphis. The average income in Berclair-Highland Heights is also still under $30,000, which has played a role in its increased crime rate in recent years.

As we alluded to a moment ago, you might actually be making a smart decision by purchasing a home in the Berclair-Highland Heights neighborhood now and holding onto it for a little while. But as far as moving to Berclair-Highland Heights this year? That’s probably not going to be the best idea.

White Haven-Coro Lake

Of all the neighborhoods in Memphis, this is one of the largest options around. There are about 80,000 people who live in the White Haven-Coro Lake neighborhood.

This might lead you to believe that White Haven-Coro Lake would be a great place to live. But unfortunately, most of this area has been neglected for years now. And because of this, both the rent and the home prices in the neighborhood are on the lower side of the spectrum.

The increased crime rate in the White Haven-Coro Lake neighborhood is a byproduct of this. There are quite a few violent crimes that take place in the area each year. So it’s not the type of place that you’re going to want to move to if you plan on raising a family in Memphis.

Downtown

If you were to visit Memphis, you would likely spend your fair share of time in the downtown area. There are so many cool things to see and do in this area when you’re visiting from out of town.

But if you were to buy a place to live in Memphis in the downtown area, you would be surprised to see what it has to offer. It’s not all that it’s cracked up to be, as it’s one of the worst neighborhoods in Memphis.

There is a large homeless population in the downtown part of Memphis that resides both underneath underpasses and all along the Mississippi River. There are also several highways located nearby that can be used by those who commit crimes in the downtown area.

That isn’t to say that you shouldn’t spend time in downtown Memphis when you’re in the city. But it is to say that you might not want to go apartment shopping or house hunting in downtown Memphis if you decide to make the city your home.

Avoid Moving to One of the Worst Neighborhoods in Memphis

Memphis can be one of the best cities in the country to live in if you pick the right part of town. But if you end up living in one of the worst neighborhoods in Memphis, you’re not going to like the city very much.

You should shy away from living in any of the neighborhoods we just mentioned. They’ll prove to be some of the most dangerous places to live not just in Memphis but in the entire country.
